Exploring the Impact of Freedom of Speech

Freedom of speech and expression is constitutionally guaranteed in Section 12 of the Botswana Constitution. The country has a long tradition of open public debate rooted in the traditional Kgotla system, encapsulated by the Tswana maxim “Mmualebe o bua la gagwe” (everyone is entitled to their opinion).
